Drums

Drums are a form of percussive musical instrument most typically used to provide a rhythmic backing for other instruments, although drums can also be used as a solo instrument or in conjunction with other drums. Drums are typically assembled in a kit consisting of a bass drum, snare, two rack toms, a floor tom and a variety of cymbals including crashes and high hats. The drummer will then strike the drums using hand held sticks or foot operated pedals to produce a rhythmic beat. This is the most common way in which drums are used in a modern context.

There are also many other applications for drums aside from the typical drum kit set up, for example a marching band will utilise various drums, being played by individual members of the band. Another example would be the various percussionists who make up the percussion section of an orchestra, each of them taking charge with an individual drum, set of drums or other piece of percussion, each playing an individual role, rather than a drummer utilising a drum kit in a band, who will take upon the role of most of, if not all of the percussion.

Drums are a popular choice for people who are seeking to take up an instrument as many people are attracted by the level of energy that is involved in playing the drums.
