Musical Instruments

Musical instruments are pieces of equipment whose intended purpose is to produce sound that can be used in a music context. Taking this into account one could argue that practically any items that are being used to create music can be classified as musical instruments even if that is not their intended purpose, however most people when they use the term musical instruments are referring specifically to an item which was designed with them intended purpose of creating musical sound.

There are many and varied types of musical instruments available although they can be loosely classified into groups such as strings, which encompasses all musical instruments which create sound from a vibrating string, woodwind, musical instruments in this group use air blown from the players mouth rushing past a reed to create sound and percussion which encompasses all musical instruments which are struck in order to create sound. Interestingly there is some debate as to which category of musical instruments the piano falls into as it encompasses both aspects of percussion and string musical instruments as the player strikes a key which in turn cause a beater to strike a string sounding a tone. Musical instrumentals have a long history and have been part of our society since before history was first recorded.
